Introduction

Have you ever wondered what the purpose of a rainbow was? Or what a rainbow is made out of?  Hopefully as you complete this WebQuest some of the questions you have about rainbows will be answered.  Although there are many different explanations for the rainbow's purpose, the most common explanation is that its a symbol of God's promise to mankind that the Earth will never again be destroyed by a flood.  The cool thing about rainbows is they're actually optical illusions made up of seven colors of light!

The Task

When it rains the light of the sun shines through the raindrops, causing the light to bend (or refract) and reflect off the rain. The rain acts like a prism, splitting the white light into the colors of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violetIf you and I were standing side by side and we were both looking at the same rainbow in the sky, we would actually be seeing two distinctly different rainbows.  This is true because the raindrops my eyes are looking through would be a different set of raindrops than your eyes were looking through.  For this reason, viewing a rainbow becomes a personalized experience.

In order to better understand the magnificent beauty found in the rainbow, your task(s) will be to explore:

  1. HOW rainbows are made

  2. The different TYPES of rainbows

  3. The PRIMARY COLORS in a rainbow

  4. How the SECONDARY COLORS are created

  5. Perform at least one of the RAINBOW MAKING ACTIVITIES found in the activities links

  6. Write a REPORT about the facts you learned on this WebQuest.

The Process
  • Students may work individually or in groups of two while researching the WebQuest topic.
  • Each student will need to use notebook paper or a copy of this Graphic Organizer Worksheet to keep your notes organized while completing the WebQuest.
  • Each Student will be required to work independently on their report and rainbow art.
  • The report must be your answer to the Science WebQuest challenge or    task(s).

A Riddle Poem...

Red and green and delicate blue,
orange, yellow, and violet, too.
Indigo's there, a deep, dark, hue.
I see, but can't touch it, and neither
can you!

What is it? (A rainbow!)
